In the early of 21 century, the development of technology has been growing so fast and become more important to our society. Today, human being are inseperable with the existence of technology. People using modern technology everywhere to help them and connect between one to another efficiently.
Today, children growing up in a rapid changing technology which needs more attention from their parents. Technology is like two side of coin. If it used wisely, it will support education and knowledge to the children, on the contrary, it probably has bad influence and making such negative addiction effect. Most of children use technology for pleasure and study purposes. Furthermore, computer now is relatively affordable than 10 years ago and every school, right now, have computer laboratorium to give their students education about using technology for the right purposes. The expectation of technology in education is giving the children to do self learning, exploring knowledge, creativity and fascination beside for entertaining purposes.
There are six ways to identify the benefit of using modern technology for children. First of all, technology is valuable if it can accelerate and deepen their basic skills, a study by University of Michigan showed that computer increase efficiency for students to learn something. Then secondly, technology could be a tool for engaging and motivating student. The aim of technology for children is improving their communication skill, problem solving and importantly, developing their positive attitude toward their peer. The third way is building a linkage between academic theory and practices which will prepare the children to understand the theory and real field practices. The fourth benefit of technology is increasing skill for the real work force, the rapid changing of technology in society need an understansing and expertise in using technology. In addition, technology is valuable if it can help to help teacher as a powerful learning tool. Finally, technology should be a catalyst for change in school which means the teacher can provides information, evaluate sources and communicate effecively.
On the contrary, there are some disadvantages of modern technology toward the children. Modern children depend on many modern gadget like television, computer, iphone, music player, and other mechanical things. Technology might be harmful if it is used inappropriately which will decrease children competency. For example, calculator is helpful to do mathematical calculation or digital translator which save time and energy to translate one language to another. Consequently, those kind of digital machines will decrease children’s skill, competency, increasing laziness and make dependence on technology. Technology also has bad effect for children’s behaviour. Children love playing game, watching televison, surfing on the internet, or playing online game. Thus, technology not only give them pleasure but also addictive effect, children will spend more time in front of TV or computer to play than doing their homework or reading book. Modern technology just like social network help people to connect more frequently, nevertheless, a research in America showed that social media make a social isolation which decreasing an intimate and in-depth conversation which might be a dangerous effect for children to build a good relationship with other people personally.
On the light of those facts, the value of technology depends on how people use it. It will be valuable if it used appropriately and vice versa. Children needs a guidance to use technology wisely. With a guidance, the various technology could be very helpful and give a lot of benefit such as doing self learning, exploring informations and knowledge, increasing creativity, and also for developing relationship. Without guidance, the usage will be inappropriate and distract their learning and development.
